Warning from Pamukkale University: Plantar Warts from Summer Increase in Autumn

04.11.2025
Pamukkale University (PAU) Department of Dermatology Chair Prof. Dr. Ahmet Metin warned that plantar warts contracted during the summer months have been appearing more frequently in the autumn season and issued important public health advice.

Prof. Dr. Metin explained: “Plantar warts are an infectious disease that can easily spread in moist environments such as swimming pools, beaches, and communal showers, especially during the summer. The source of these warts, HPV (Human Papilloma Virus), can enter the body when people walk barefoot in such shared areas. However, symptoms often do not appear immediately; infections contracted during the summer usually manifest themselves in autumn. During this period, we observe a noticeable increase in outpatient clinic visits. The spread of warts among those who have used swimming pools throughout the summer is a situation we frequently encounter. Plantar warts affect about 14% of the population and are a common health issue. Globally, 2% of the population seeks medical assistance for this reason each year. Children and adolescents, due to their more sensitive immune systems, are the highest risk group. Unfortunately, many patients underestimate or notice the symptoms late. Yet, warts can cause pain on the soles of the feet, making walking difficult, restricting daily activities, and negatively affecting work efficiency and academic performance in students. Delayed treatment lowers quality of life and increases the risk of infection spreading. Therefore, it is very important to consult a dermatologist at an early stage.”

Prof. Dr. Ahmet Metin: “Plantar warts are a treatable condition.”

Emphasizing that HPV is a highly contagious virus, Prof. Dr. Metin continued: “Pool hygiene is of great importance. Regular and effective disinfection of swimming pools is critical to breaking the chain of transmission. Similarly, health screenings and necessary information for pool users are essential for both individual and public protection. Otherwise, such infections may turn into public health problems that are difficult to control. There are actually simple but effective ways to prevent infection. People should avoid walking barefoot in public humid areas. Personal items, especially those in contact with feet such as towels, shoes, and socks, should never be shared with others. Keeping feet clean and dry and maintaining personal hygiene are very important. If a wart is present, it should be covered and never picked at, as this increases the risk of spreading. It should be remembered that plantar warts are a treatable condition; however, treatment should be individually planned and carried out under the supervision of a specialist physician. I would like to draw attention to the increase in cases during the autumn months and call on our citizens to be aware and take precautions. Protecting our own health also means protecting public health.”
