Statement from PAU Hospitals on the Effects of Smoking and Alcohol on Premature Skin Aging
Professor Ahmet Metin, Head of the Department of Dermatology and Venereal Diseases at Pamukkale University (PAU) Hospitals, made statements regarding the effects of smoking and alcohol on skin health.
Professor Ahmet Metin, Head of the Department of Dermatology and Venereal Diseases at PAU Hospitals, stated: “The damage caused by smoking and alcohol to our skin is not only aesthetic. Premature aging, a dull appearance, wrinkles, and hair loss are in fact visible signs of damage that begins in our cells and blood vessels. Our skin is a mirror of our overall health. Smoking constricts our blood vessels, preventing the skin from receiving oxygen and nutrients. As a result, the skin becomes thinner, loses its elasticity, and takes on a dull and lifeless appearance. Dryness, flaking, hair loss, and brittle nails occur. In addition, wound healing is significantly delayed, and smoking accelerates premature skin aging. Alcohol, on the other hand, increases DNA damage in cells, weakens the immune system, and raises oxidative stress. Scientific studies show that regular alcohol consumption may increase the risk of developing certain skin cancers, especially melanoma. Alcohol may also trigger psoriasis flare-ups and cause facial redness attacks and urticaria.”
Professor Metin: “Quitting smoking and alcohol is the most effective way to prevent premature skin aging and maintain a healthy appearance.”
Professor Ahmet Metin continued: “Long-term alcohol use leads to vitamin and mineral deficiencies. In particular, deficiencies in vitamin C, zinc, and B-group vitamins cause delayed wound healing, hair loss, brittle nails, and oral ulcers. In other words, alcohol significantly reduces the skin’s ability to regenerate itself. Let us not forget: the dull skin, deep wrinkles, or unhealthy appearance you see in the mirror is not only the result of age, but often also the result of damage caused by smoking and alcohol in the body. For healthy and youthful-looking skin, the most effective treatment is to avoid smoking, not consume alcohol, and adopt healthy lifestyle habits. Because protecting skin health comes from protecting overall health,” he stated.
