Rare Case Successfully Operated at PAU Hospitals

A patient with reversed internal organs and a lung cancer diagnosis has regained health following a successful operation performed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gökhan Öztürk, Head of the Department of Thoracic Surgery at Pamukkale University (PAU) Hospitals.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gökhan Öztürk explained the case of the 59-year-old female patient, stating: “The patient was admitted to our clinic after a lesion was detected in her lung. Advanced examinations revealed that the lesion was consistent with a cancerous mass. However, what made our patient unique was the complete reversal of her internal organs. This condition, known as ‘situs inversus totalis,’ is extremely rare, occurring in approximately one in 50,000 individuals. In situs inversus totalis, organs are mirrored, which makes surgical procedures more complex. Therefore, we plan such operations much more carefully compared to standard cases. Literature also shows that lung cancer cases combined with this condition are very limited.”

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gökhan Öztürk added: “Even when organs are reversed, successful outcomes are possible with proper planning and an experienced team.”

Providing details about the operation, Öztürk said: “Despite these anatomical differences and the patient’s additional chronic conditions, we successfully performed the surgery. We removed the cancerous lung lobe, a procedure known as lobectomy, without any complications. The postoperative follow-up proceeded smoothly, and the patient was discharged in good health. This case once again demonstrates that successful outcomes can be achieved in such rare conditions with careful planning and an experienced surgical team.”
