PAU Hospitals Highlight Intensive Care Awareness Month

22.05.2026
Prof. Dr. Hülya Sungurtekin, Head of the Division of Anesthesiology and Reanimation–Intensive Care at Pamukkale University (PAU) Hospitals, made a statement within the scope of Intensive Care Awareness Month, observed from May 1 to May 31.

In her statement, Prof. Dr. Hülya Sungurtekin said:

“I would like to draw attention to the importance of the healthcare services provided in intensive care units and make visible the efforts of healthcare professionals who work selflessly in this field. Intensive care is not only an area equipped with advanced technology, but also a vital team effort carried out with great dedication by physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, and all healthcare professionals.

In intensive care units, advanced diagnosis, treatment, and life support are provided to patients who have developed one or more organ failures. The struggle carried out here often takes place on the fine line between life and death. However, our goal in intensive care is not only to keep patients alive; it is also to ensure that our patients can maintain a good quality of life. Because living does not simply mean surviving.

It is of great importance to increase public awareness and accurate knowledge regarding intensive care processes. Intensive care units are specialized areas that require patience, knowledge, experience, and continuous effort. Our healthcare professionals work with great responsibility 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. During this process, the understanding and trust shown by both our patients and their relatives are also important parts of the treatment.

Understanding intensive care, supporting it, and drawing attention to the needs of this field are shared responsibilities for all of us. On the occasion of this special month, I would like to thank all healthcare professionals who contribute to intensive care services and express my hope that awareness of this issue will continue to increase within our society.”
