Patient Recovers After Battery Removal at PAU Hospitals
A 39-year-old patient who was admitted to Pamukkale University (PAU) Hospitals Emergency Department with a complaint of swallowing a battery had the battery removed from his stomach through a successful procedure performed by Prof. Dr. Mustafa Çelik, faculty member of the Department of Gastroenterology, and his team at the endoscopy unit.
The 39-year-old patient who applied to the Emergency Department with a complaint of swallowing a battery was quickly referred to the Endoscopy Unit after emergency imaging revealed the presence of a foreign object in the stomach. During the emergency endoscopy procedure carried out by Prof. Dr. Mustafa Çelik, faculty member of the Department of Gastroenterology, and his team, the battery inside the stomach was successfully removed.
Prof. Dr. Mustafa Çelik made the following statement: “Foreign objects with sharp or piercing properties, as well as materials containing heavy metals such as batteries, can cause serious health problems if they remain in the gastrointestinal system for a long time. Such foreign bodies must be removed through endoscopic or surgical methods. Thanks to advanced endoscopic techniques applied today, many foreign objects can be removed without the need for open surgery. This both provides a faster recovery process for patients and reduces the risk of complications.”
Prof. Dr. Çelik: “Foreign Objects Pose Serious Health Risks”
Highlighting that cases of foreign body ingestion are more common especially among children and the elderly, Prof. Dr. Çelik emphasized that this is a health issue requiring urgent evaluation. Issuing a warning to the public, Çelik continued: “In cases where foreign objects such as batteries are swallowed, it is necessary to immediately apply to the nearest healthcare facility; otherwise, serious complications such as perforation, bleeding, and poisoning in the digestive system may occur. With its equipment and expert team, our Endoscopy Unit continues to achieve successful results in foreign body removal procedures. In such cases requiring emergency intervention, we contribute to restoring our patients’ health with rapid diagnosis and appropriate treatment.”
