E.N.G., 10-year-old and Nimet Açıkbaş, 14-year-old Nimet Açıkbaş, who were found to have a hole in their hearts, regained their health with angiography method without surgery.

Pamukkale University Faculty of Medicine Hospital Pediatric Cardiology Department performed ASD (Atrial Septal Defect) closure procedure on two pediatric patients with a hole in the heart.

Two children who presented to the Pediatric Cardiology Outpatient Clinic with a murmur complaint were found to have a large hole between the atria of the heart (ASD) by echocardiography. Echocardiography performed by swallowing a probe through the esophagus, which is a more advanced examination method, showed that the patients were suitable for ASD closure without surgery. The holes in the hearts of the children were closed with the non-surgical method, also called closed method, by entering through the groin. ASD closure procedure, which is a special procedure applied only in our hospital in Denizli in children; was performed successfully by Prof. Dr. Dolunay Gürses, Assoc. Dr. Münevver Yılmaz, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Münevver Yılmaz, Specialist Dr. Merve Oğuz and Specialist Dr. Emine Sayın; the pediatric cardiology team. The children were discharged the day after the procedure, which lasted about half an hour.

Prof. Dr. Dolunay Gürses, Head of the Department of Pediatric Cardiology at Pamukkale University, said: "Atrial septal defect is a hole in the wall between the left and right atria in the heart. It is usually asymptomatic in childhood and can be suspected by hearing a murmur in the heart on examination when visiting a doctor for another reason. The definitive diagnosis is made by a pediatric cardiologist through examination and echocardiography. ASDs that are not closed in time can lead to shortness of breath, rhythm disturbances and even heart failure at a later age."

Prof. Dr. Gürses stated that timely recognition of the disease and timely intervention is life-saving in these children and emphasized the importance of early diagnosis. He stated that these holes can be closed with angiography without surgery and that the procedure is a safe and comfortable method for children.
