Nursing Week Activities Start Early at PAU Hospitals
Celebrated between May 12-18, the Nursing Week celebrations and events started this year with a program prepared in cooperation with the Faculty of Health Sciences Nursing Department and Pamukkale University (PAU) Hospital Nursing Services Directorate.
Denizli Governor Ömer Faruk Coşkun, Denizli Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Bülent Nuri Çavuşoğlu, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Durmuş Akalın, deans, faculty members, PAU Hospitals Nursing Services Manager Demet Ekici, PAU Hospitals nurses and nursing students attended the event held at PAU Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Yılmaz Congress and Culture Center.
Demet Ekici, Director of Nursing Services, who made an opening speech at the program, which started with a moment of silence and the reading of the National Anthem, stated that the nursing profession constitutes the indispensable basis of the World Health System, that nurses successfully continue qualified care, treatment and rehabilitation services in the areas where they work, but that the need for nurses has gained more importance after the Covid-19 Pandemic. She emphasized the importance of seeing the nursing profession receive the value it deserves both materially and morally and improving working conditions. She also touched upon the theme of 'Our Nurses are Our Future, the Economic Power of Care' determined by the International Nurses Association (ICN) for the year 2024 and mentioned the contributions of nurses to both public health and the health economy by reducing the length of hospitalization of patients, preventing infections, pressure sores, secondary diseases and complications with the qualified health care and care they have been providing to patients for years.
In her opening speech, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences Prof. Dr. Sevgi Özkan said that accredited nursing education programs provide the right skills and competencies to respond to the changing and developing health needs of societies and enable students to become nurses who grow up with self-confidence. Prof. Dr. Özkan also mentioned that the nursing profession, which constitutes the most crowded group of health professionals, is a discipline that is based on science and requires labor in terms of providing the necessary education and professional equipment, and congratulated all nurses on Nursing Day and Week.
Speaking at the program, Pamukkale University Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Durmuş Akalın touched the guests when he talked about the feelings left by an anecdote he read while examining the dusty pages of history during his academic studies while serving in Çanakkale. Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Akalın stated that this nation suffered losses due to the inability to treat even the wounded who could be treated due to lack of medicines, materials, inadequate nurses and health personnel in the struggles won for this homeland, how grave and grave this situation was, that disasters such as wars and pandemics continue today, and that educated, expert nurses are effective in ensuring that the infrastructure of the health system is strong, and celebrated the Nursing Day and week of all nurses.
Informing that the celebrations and activities for the nursing week will continue, the authorities stated that the volleyball teams consisting of nurses will play semi-final and final matches on May 11-12, 2024. It was also shared that a “Nursing Night” will be organized on May 17, 2024 to motivate all staff.
