26 June International Day Against Drug Abuse and Smuggling: Everywhere, Everything, Everyone

27.06.2022

In 1987, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the 26th of June as the "International Day to Combat Drug Abuse and Smuggling" in order to achieve the goal of a healthy society free of drugs and to strengthen action and cooperation in the international arena in the fight against drugs.

Department of Psychiatry Faculty Member AMATEM Center Director Assoc. Dr. Tuğçe Toker Uğurlu made statements on the subject: "As stated in the 2022 European Drug Report, we can summarize it as “Everywhere, Everything, Everyone.” Today, we can see the effects of drug problems on everyone, directly or indirectly, everywhere. In addition, when we look at consumption patterns, we see that everything with psychoactive potential can be consumed consciously or unconsciously and can find a place in the drug market. In the report prepared by examining the data of 2020, the number of overdose deaths related to illicit drugs was reported as approximately 6500 in the European Union countries, including the data of Turkey and Norway. Of these, 74% are heroin-related deaths. Deaths and crimes related to drug use are increasing day by day in our country and in the world."

PAU AMATEM unit, which provides services in the treatment phase of the fight against drugs, is a clinic where alcohol and substance use disorders are treated. Inpatient and outpatient treatment services are provided to both male and female patients. In addition to the drug treatments applied, individual and group psychotherapy (psychodrama), motivational interviewing, occupational therapies, sports and art activities, and SAMBA (Smoking, Alcohol and Substance Addiction Treatment Program) psychoeducation for patients and their families are provided.
