19.03.2024

Pamukkale University (PAU) organized an event titled 'March 18th, Çanakkale Naval Victory and Resurrection' on March 18 Çanakkale Victory and Martyrs' Remembrance Day.

Within the scope of March 18 Çanakkale Victory and Martyrs' Remembrance Day activities, firstly, PAU Motorcycle Club organized a walk of respect for martyrs in PAU Kınıklı Central Campus.

After the march, Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Kutluhan made the opening speeches, followed by a presentation titled 'March 18 Çanakkale Naval Victory and Resurrection' by Vice Rector and Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of History Lecturer Prof. Dr. Durmuş Akalın, and then a presentation by the Combat Veterans Association, Naval Ast. Turgut Bozkurt, Disabled Veteran Spc. J. Kad. Sergeant. Ömer Torun and Martyr İs. Uzm. Onb. Oğuzhan Göçenoğlu's father Abdullah Göçenoğlu shared the meaning and importance of the day.

Rector Kutluhan: "If this homeland is ours, we will work hard for this homeland, for the flag and for our independence in every field and in our own field, which is our responsibility to our martyrs as nothing"

Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Kutluhan, who made the opening speech of the conference, said "Who we are, we have no identity problem, we are from the Muslim Turkish nation. We come from where Mustafa Kemal Atatürk said 'I command to die'. The spirit of our nation is very high. This spirit does not always reveal itself. Whenever there is an attack on its homeland, flag, religion and independence, it immediately takes action. But this spirit needs to be nurtured. It is necessary to see the places where the Battle of Çanakkale took place. If you didn't go in primary school, middle school, high school, university, if you didn't go in your life, you should definitely go. It is my prayer: "O God, grant every Turkish citizen to see Çanakkale once in his/her life. Yes, our history is constantly repeating itself. Our enemies, who were at our doorstep yesterday with their armies, are now trying to penetrate us and divide the homeland through terrorist organizations. Despite all kinds of betrayal, this honorable nation again says Çanakkale is impassable at the cost of its life. Dear students, let us never forget this: Nothing means anything if there is no homeland. Your career is also meaningless. My suggestion for you to understand these feelings and this spirit is this: Visit a family of a martyr or a veteran. If you have not done this until today, do it and let us understand why we have hundreds of thousands of veterans and martyrs. As a result, if this homeland is ours, we will work hard for this homeland, for the flag and for our independence in every field and in our own field, and this is our responsibility to our martyrs as nothing."

Prof. Dr. Akalın "Çanakkale is the story of the struggle of our ancestors, grandfathers and nameless heroes"

After the opening speech, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Durmuş Akalın made a presentation titled '18 March Çanakkale Naval Victory and Resurrection'. Prof. Dr. Akalın started his speech by explaining how Çanakkale, which was actually a front, became known as the Battle of Çanakkale with the struggles and the epic written, and continued his speech with information about the years he spent in Çanakkale and his work here. Prof. Akalın explained what happened in the war and the historical process and stated that Çanakkale became a matter of existence and extinction of the homeland and that our heroes fought with these feelings; it is the story of the struggle of our ancestors, grandfathers and nameless heroes. Drawing attention to the tactical moves made in the war and the struggle with the means at hand, Prof. Dr. Akalın gave examples of the determination to fight and shared information about the importance and meaning of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk for Çanakkale.

Prof. Dr. Akalın: "We won this front, but unfortunately we lost the war. What happened when we won the front? We won a happy Turkey"

Prof. Dr. Akalın: "Half a million people lost their lives here as a result of the battles that started on March 18, 1915 and turned into a life and death struggle on April 25, 1915. We won this front, but unfortunately we lost the war. What happened when we lost? We became part of the Ottoman Empire. What happened when we won the front? We won a happy Turkey.

If we look at the officer staff of the Çanakkale front, Mustafa Kemals, Kazım Karabekirler, Fevzi Paşalar, İsmet İnönüler, many names served. This is why Çanakkale became legendary, as I heard from my grandmother. There is no city in Anatolia that did not send soldiers to Çanakkale. My special request to you is that when you go to Çanakkale, look at the hometowns of the soldiers. Look at the ages of the martyrs. You will see that people from many places outside Turkey came and fought. You will see that you do not even know the names of some cities. You will be surprised at their ages. Especially on the way to that monument, look at the names of our martyrs in the turbaned place in the cemetery and you will see that we also have martyrs from Denizli. Take a look at their ages and you will see that they are as young as sixteen. In this respect, Çanakkale is a story of existence. Our officers who came out of here, our soldiers who came out of here always thought this while fighting the war of liberation. We can't defeat the mighty, whether we can defeat the Greek army or this Armenian gang in Çanakkale, this belief, this confidence paved the way for today's Turkey. May their souls rest in peace."
In the second part of the conference, Combat Veteran Midshipman Turgut Bozkurt and Disabled Veteran Specialist Sergeant Ömer Torun talked about their duty processes and shared about the spirit of Çanakkale. Abdullah Göçenoğlu, the relative of Martyr Specialized Sergeant Oğuzhan Göçenoğlu, said, "Like my martyr son, we are standing upright to protect this homeland. At the end of the ceremony, Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Kutluhan presented gifts to Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Durmuş Akalın and the veterans and relatives of martyrs who shared at the conference.
In addition, within the scope of March 18 Çanakkale Victory and Martyrs' Remembrance Day activities, PAU Aviation Community made parachute flights throughout the day to pay respect to the martyrs.
