The “Family” Theme Examined in Foreign Language Textbooks

05.02.2026
The book Language, Culture and Family: The Representation of Family in Foreign Language Textbooks, edited by Pamukkale University faculty members Ertan Kuşçu, Zeynep Gençer Baloğlu, and Hatice Altun, has been published.

Prepared on the occasion of 2025 being declared the “Year of the Family” upon the discretion of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, this academic study examines, from a comparative perspective, how the “family” theme is constructed in textbooks used in the teaching of Turkish, Arabic, Persian, English, French, Italian, Russian, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese as foreign languages. The study analyzes in detail not only the linguistic teaching of the concept of family in Eastern and Western cultures, but also its cultural, social, and ideological dimensions, revealing striking differences between them.

Another noteworthy aspect among the academic contributions included in the book is that a significant portion of the chapter authors are from Pamukkale University, which strengthens the institutional character of the work while clearly demonstrating PAU’s accumulated expertise in the fields of language education and cultural studies. Prepared with contributions from experts in the field, the book draws attention to the importance of cultural transmission in language teaching by analyzing family representations through visual, discursive, and task-based designs in textbooks. The work serves as an important reference source for academics, teachers, and material developers working in the fields of language education, linguistics, and culture.
