PAU Department of New Media and Communication Left Its Mark on the Artificial Intelligence Symposium in the TRNC
Associate Professor Emel Dikbaş Torun, Head of the Department of New Media and Communication at Pamukkale University (PAU) Faculty of Communication, attended the “13th International Communication Days: Artificial Intelligence in Communication Theory and Practice Symposium,” organized in cooperation with Near East University and Üsküdar University, together with 10 graduate students.
A total of 7 scientific papers prepared under the supervision of Associate Professor Emel Dikbaş Torun were presented at the international symposium held in Nicosia between May 13–15. The studies prepared in the fields of artificial intelligence, digital communication, media ethics, algorithmic culture, deepfake technologies, and disinformation attracted significant attention throughout the symposium. Representing Pamukkale University together with 10 graduate students, Associate Professor Emel Dikbaş Torun and her students were among the prominent participants of the symposium with their presentations and academic contributions. The presented papers addressed the impact of artificial intelligence on communication processes, transformation in digital culture, the role of algorithms in media, ethical problems created by deepfake content, disinformation processes spreading on digital platforms, and the effects of algorithmic culture on user behavior. The studies were followed with interest by academics and researchers from different universities.
Associate Professor Torun Became a Live Broadcast Guest on Bayrak TV
Following the intense interest they received during the symposium, Associate Professor Emel Dikbaş Torun became a live broadcast guest on the Bayrak Radio Television Corporation. Evaluating the transformation created by artificial intelligence in the field of communication during the live broadcast, Torun stated that AI-supported content production is reshaping the media sector and that digital literacy and artificial intelligence literacy have become one of the fundamental topics of communication education. During the live broadcast, Torun also emphasized the importance of participating in an international symposium together with her students and stressed that not only individual achievements in academia but also guiding young researchers carries great value. She stated that graduate students presenting their scientific studies on international platforms improves their academic self-confidence, contributes to gaining a research culture, and provides important experience for their future academic careers.
Stating that, as the Pamukkale University Department of New Media and Communication, they attach importance to producing, researching, and becoming visible in international academic networks together with students, Torun expressed that the active participation of young researchers in scientific processes is important for the future of the field of communication in Türkiye. While bringing together academics and researchers from different countries, the symposium contributed to the evaluation of current discussions in the field of artificial intelligence and communication from an interdisciplinary perspective.
