The book titled “The Multidimensional Structure of Addiction: Food Technology, Netizen Culture and the Educational Perspective” by academics from the Acıpayam Vocational School (Acıpayam VS) of Pamukkale University (PAU) has been published.

As a successful example of interdisciplinary work, the book was made available to readers as of May 16 as the product of the intensive and meticulous efforts of Lecturer Dr. Sinan Akbal and Lecturer Dr. Cevat Sercan Özer. Associate Professor Dr. Hüsnü Ergün, Deputy Director of Acıpayam Vocational School, also authored a chapter in the book. Addressing the phenomenon of addiction within an interdisciplinary framework, the book evaluates the risks emerging in the context of digitalization and modern food systems through a holistic approach. It aims to contribute to the development of policies and practices in this field.

Addressing an important issue, the book examines the phenomenon of addiction, which manifests itself in various dimensions in contemporary society, from a multidimensional perspective, particularly through the lenses of food addiction and social media addiction. In the book, food addiction is evaluated as a behavioral disorder characterized by excessive consumption and the activation of the brain’s reward system, while it is emphasized that ultra-processed foods with high sugar, fat, and salt content may trigger this process through their sensory properties. The book also goes beyond considering food addiction solely as a biologically based phenomenon and addresses the issue within the framework of a complex structure shaped by environmental factors such as food technologies, marketing strategies, accessibility, and socioeconomic conditions. In addition, the book discusses social media addiction through the concept of the netizen identity emerging within the context of the network society and draws attention to the increasing intensity of social media use through growing interaction and a state of constant connectivity in digital environments. While emphasizing the effects of increased digital participation, the book evaluates forms of digital addiction as processes that emerge through the interaction of technological and structural factors, rather than merely as a lack of individual willpower. The importance of multifaceted strategies such as environmental regulations in educational settings, media literacy, product reformulation, labeling policies, and regulatory practices is also emphasized in the book.
