17.05.2024

Within the scope of the protocol signed between the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Culture and Tourism and OPET Petrol Co., OPET will also support the excavations of the ancient city of Sillyon in Antalya's Serik district, which is being carried out by Pamukkale University. Pamukkale University (PAU) Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Kutluhan, who attended the signing ceremony of the protocol, stated that the protocol will make a serious contribution to the corporate identity of PAU.

Within the scope of the signed protocol, OPET will support the excavations being carried out under the direction of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murat Taşkıran, Lecturer at the Department of Classical Archaeology, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Pamukkale University, throughout the year.

The protocol ceremony for this cooperation, which is a valuable step for the rich historical and cultural heritage of our country, was held at Antalya Belek Regnum Carya Hotel with the participation of Antalya Provincial Director of Culture and Tourism Candemir Zoroğlu and OPET Board Founding Member Nurten Öztürk, Pamukkale University Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Kutluhan and Sillyon Ancient City Excavation Head Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murat Taşkıran.

Rector Kutluhan: “Bilateral agreements, national and international projects and various sponsorship supports in the field of archaeology contribute significantly to the corporate identity of our university.”

Expressing his views on the protocol, Pamukkale University Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Kutluhan stated the following: “As Pamukkale University, we are very proud and happy to be here. As Pamukkale University, we attach importance to archaeology and art history studies from the very beginning. The opportunities of our institution are mobilized for the success of these fields. The importance we attach to history, culture, art and archaeology has also been a perspective that we follow in an institutional sense. So much so that the establishment of the first and only archaeology institute in Turkey within the university by our university supports these thoughts. The achievements of our professors and valuable team members in the excavation areas not only make us proud, but also lead us to new searches to support them. In particular, bilateral agreements, national and international projects and various sponsorship supports in the field of archaeology contribute significantly to the corporate identity of our university. The number of excavations carried out by Pamukkale University with the decree of the Council of Ministers and the Presidency is ten and in summary; Celal Şimşek is the coordinator of the excavations of Laodikeia Ancient City and Hierapolis Ancient City, Bilal Söğüt is the coordinator of the excavations of Stratonikeia Ancient City, Bahadır Duman is the coordinator of Triapolis and currently Aphrodisias Ancient City excavations, Mustafa Beyazıt is the coordinator of Tabae Ancient City, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gökçen Kurtuluş Öztaşkın is the head of the Olympos excavations and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murat Taşkıran, who is currently here, is the head of the Sillyon Excavations. I am proud of all of them. In this context, I attach great importance and appreciation to the Sillyon Excavation sponsorship agreement signed between OPET A.Ş. and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, which is the reason why we are gathering here today. I think that the Sillyon Excavation Project, which we carry out jointly with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism with this sponsorship activity, will be even stronger with the support of OPET A.Ş. in the future. This will not only make a significant contribution to inter-institutional cooperation, but will also support the meeting of an archaeological and historical site such as Sillyon, which has remained in the depths of history, with the scientific world. Moreover, it will offer a new tourism destination to Antalya, one of the most distinguished cultural and tourism centers of the world. On this occasion, we would like to take this opportunity to thank the OPET family and the esteemed members of the Board of Directors for their support for the Sillyon excavation we are conducting as Pamukkale University. We would like to thank the General Directorate of Cultural Assets and Museums, Antalya Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism, Antalya Governorship, Serik District Governorship and Serik Municipality for their support and for making this process successful. We present our regards.”

After the signed sponsorship agreement, Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Kutluhan and the accompanying delegation went to Sillyon Ancient City where they were informed about the studies carried out in the ancient city by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murat Taşkıran, a faculty member of PAU Department of Archaeology and Head of Excavation of Sillyon Ancient City.
