“The Foresight and Courage Displayed by Mustafa Kemal Is Not Only a Military Success”
In his presentation at the conference titled “Resurrection for a Crescent: Çanakkale 1915,” Prof. Dr. Ercan Haytoğlu emphasized the events before and after the Çanakkale War, the significance of the victory, and that the struggle of the Turkish army in the war ignited the spirit of the nation and that this resistance became a source of inspiration for the War of Independence.
Prof. Dr. Haytoğlu also discussed the plans of the Allied Powers to pass through the Dardanelles and eliminate the Ottoman Empire, highlighting in particular the aims of the United Kingdom and France to deliver aid to Russia and capture the Ottoman capital. He underlined that the mines laid by the Nusret Mine Ship in Erenköy Bay, which held an important place in the Ottoman defense, changed the course of the war. Stating that the resistance shown by the Ottoman army disrupted the plans of the Allied Powers and led to their withdrawal with heavy losses, Haytoğlu noted that the Çanakkale Victory holds an important place in the nation’s memory and is a symbol of national pride.
Finally, Prof. Dr. Haytoğlu concluded his speech by stating that the young commanders who fought in Çanakkale later assumed important roles in the War of Independence and that the experience they gained there formed the foundation of the national struggle.
At the end of the conference, a certificate of appreciation was presented to Prof. Dr. Haytoğlu by PAU Rector Mahmud Güngör in memory of the day.
