31.08.2023
Pamukkale University Vice Rector and Head of the History Department of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Prof. Dr. Durmuş Akalın held an e-conference on "National Struggle and August 30 Victory Day" on the occasion of August 30 Victory Day.

On August 30th Victory Day, he made a speech about the nature and meaning and importance of this war based on the historical background: "As it is known, the Ottoman Empire was a state that held a large surface area with territories in many areas. This continued for centuries. Since the 19th century, when the weakness of the Ottoman Empire was seen due to both internal and external reasons, it is seen that an empire gradually declined in a phase in which the Ottoman Empire was dragged towards some dilemmas in the changes in the social, political, military and economic fields, as the center of power gradually shifted from the east to the west, forcing the Ottoman Empire to force new policy areas centered on the west. Within this decline, the 19th century was a period in which many calculations were made, especially with internal and external interventions, and which was extremely challenging for us, but open to rapid changes and technological developments in terms of the world. From the beginning of the 19th century, various moves were made to overcome a phase with the guidance or advice of talented and zealous sultans, sometimes statesmen, and towards the end of the century, with the guidance or advice of opinion leaders who emerged from within the society or state bureaucracy, or with reform attempts.

While colonialism was practiced in countries such as Africa, Asia and Latin America in the east, it was also indirectly imposed on countries such as the Ottoman Empire.  However, the patriotic people of this geography started to raise their objections at this point from that period onwards. From these objections, we will see that the teams that will establish the modern Republic of Turkey will sprout and grow over time.
