Associate Professor Dr. Gamze Gököz Doğu, Head of the Department of Medical Oncology at Pamukkale University (PAU) Hospitals, made statements on the occasion of May 1–31 Skin Cancer Awareness Month.
In her statement, Prof. Dr. Gamze Gököz Doğu said: “Skin cancer is among the most common types of cancer worldwide, and prolonged exposure to the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays is considered one of the most important risk factors. Therefore, sun protection plays a critical role in preventing the disease. Even the smallest changes in moles on the skin should not be ignored. Asymmetry, color change, growth, bleeding, or non-healing skin lesions are important warning signs for skin cancer and must be evaluated. In particular, direct sun exposure between 10:00 and 16:00 poses a risk, and protection from the sun during these hours is of great importance. Regular use of sunscreen and conscious sun exposure are among the key preventive approaches in reducing the risk of skin cancer. Early diagnosis is the most important factor that directly affects treatment success. Therefore, regular skin checks should not be neglected. Within the scope of Skin Cancer Awareness Month, I would like to remind that society being more aware of the harmful effects of the sun and recognizing possible symptoms early is of vital importance.”
