Making statements, PAU Hospitals Head of the Division of Medical Oncology, Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Gamze Gököz Doğu said: “Bladder cancer is one of the types of cancer that we frequently encounter both in the world and in our country. However, the encouraging point is that when diagnosed early, treatment success is quite high. Therefore, certain symptoms should never be underestimated. The most important symptom I especially want to emphasize is blood in the urine. If a person notices painless bleeding in the urine, this should not be considered temporary, and a specialist should definitely be consulted. In addition, complaints such as frequent urination, burning during urination, and difficulty urinating may also be important warning signs. One of the most significant risk factors for bladder cancer is smoking. The risk of developing this disease increases several times in individuals who smoke. Furthermore, long-term exposure to certain chemicals, advanced age, and chronic infections may also increase the risk. The most critical point here is to seek medical examination without delay when symptoms appear. Because bladder cancer diagnosed at an early stage can be treated much more successfully. Unfortunately, many patients may ignore their complaints and delay seeking medical attention. However, early diagnosis saves lives. On the occasion of Bladder Cancer Awareness Month, we attach importance to raising greater awareness in our society on this issue. Adopting healthy lifestyle habits, avoiding smoking, and not neglecting regular health check-ups are of great importance. Let us not forget; seeing blood in the urine is not normal and must definitely be investigated.”
