22.06.2026
An event titled “We Are Here Too” was organized by the Community Mental Health Center (TRSM) of Pamukkale University (PAU) Hospitals with the aim of increasing public awareness, reducing prejudice, and strengthening social solidarity regarding individuals living with schizophrenia and other chronic mental disorders.

The opening speech of the event, held at the PAU Faculty of Medicine Dean’s Conference Hall, was delivered by Chief Physician of PAU Hospitals Prof. Dr. Hakan Alkan. Drawing attention to the importance of preventive and rehabilitative mental health services, Prof. Dr. Hakan Alkan emphasized the value of the Community Mental Health Center’s efforts in supporting the participation of service users in social life and thanked all those who contributed to the organization of the event.

Following the opening speech, Head Physician of the Community Mental Health Center Prof. Dr. Ayşe Nur İnci Kenar addressed the participants. In her speech, she emphasized that schizophrenia is not a condition to be feared or one that defines the individual, and continued as follows: “The illness is a chronic brain disorder, like diabetes and hypertension, which can be managed with regular treatment, follow-up, and support. Individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia often have to struggle more with social prejudice than with the illness itself. The main purpose of the work carried out at our Community Mental Health Center is to enable service users to take part in social life as active and productive individuals. With proper treatment, regular follow-up, family support, and an inclusive societal approach, service users can continue their education, participate in working life, and maintain their social relationships. Eliminating stigma towards psychiatric disorders is of great importance.”

After the speeches, a video presentation introducing the activities of the Community Mental Health Center was shown to the participants. Within the program, poetry readings, a theater performance, folk dance performances, and a choir performance prepared by service users were staged. A musical performance consisting of nostalgic songs was also presented.

Throughout the program, the “TRSM Service Users Handicrafts and Painting Exhibition,” featuring handicrafts and artworks prepared by service users, was opened to visitors’ interest. The exhibition showcased works produced by service users throughout the year.

At the end of the event, participants met with service users and their families, delivering a shared message on reducing prejudice against mental illnesses, increasing social acceptance, and strengthening social solidarity. The “We Are Here Too” event organized by the PAU Hospitals Community Mental Health Center was held as an important awareness-raising activity supporting the active participation of service users in social life.
