"Voices from Literature" Event Organized at ITBF

In the event titled "Voices from Literature" organized by Pamukkale University (PAU) Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of French Language and Literature; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şevket Kadıoğlu, gave a speech titled "Tragic, Tragedia, Tragedy", Assist. Prof. Dr. Fatma Üçyıldız gave a speech titled "The Human Condition in Yasmina Khadra's novel The Swallows of Kabul".
In the event held at Prof. Dr. İsmail Çetişli Conference Hall, the first speaker, Assist. Prof. Dr. Fatma Üçyıldız first presented a historical perspective on the perception of women in society supported by the theories of Simon de Beauvoir and Judith Butler, and in this context, she underlined Beauvoir's view that "women are not born, they become women". In the second part of her speech, she touched upon the status of women in Yasmina Khadra's novel "The Swallows of Kabul" and how Taliban fanaticism marginalizes women.
The second speaker, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şevket Kadıoğlu, started his speech by mentioning how the term "tragic" has lost its canonical meaning through shifts in meaning in daily use. He explained the meaning of the term "tragic" in ancient tragedy with reference to Aristotle's Poetics and explained Aristotle's theory of tragedy through the terms "hybris", "hamartia", "nemesis", "catharsis", which are the main devitants of this theory. Touching on modern tragedy, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kadıoğlu discussed the difference between the tragic concept reflected in ancient tragedy and the modern tragic concept through the concepts of romantic tragedy, liberal tragedy, absurd tragedy and existential tragedy.
