Awareness Training with Earthquake Simulation at PAU
06.02.2024
Pamukkale University (PAU) Şemsettin Terzioğlu Earthquake Science and Engineering Laboratory gave Awareness Training with Earthquake Simulation on the anniversary of February 6 Earthquakes.
On February 6, 2023, the training organized in memory of the Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes that occurred in 2023 was given to the students from Zahide Kaynak Dinçer Secondary School by Prof. Dr. Halil Kumsar, Head of Geological Engineering Department of Pamukkale University Faculty of Engineering.
The event, which started with a moment of silence for our citizens who died in the February 6 Earthquakes, continued with opening speeches.
Dean Ağdağ said: "Our main goal is that Turkey should be a country with earthquake awareness and after having this awareness, it should build strong earthquake-resistant buildings."
Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Prof. Dr. Osman Nuri Ağdağ said the following in his speech: "Today is the anniversary of the February 6 Earthquakes. On behalf of the Turkish Nation, I wish God's mercy to our citizens who lost their lives in those earthquakes. I also wish condolences to their relatives. Our country experienced a great earthquake in 1999, and recently experienced the earthquakes we experienced on February 6 last year, which you will remember in the future. We have lost many lives. Therefore, we have to be vigilant as a country in this regard. We hear everywhere that 'earthquake does not kill, unsound building kills'. As the geological engineering department of the engineering faculty of our university, Halil Hocam will inform you about this issue today. At the same time, as civil engineering, we are working to combat earthquakes. After the February 6 earthquakes, both our professors from the Department of Geological Engineering and the Department of Civil Engineering went to ten cities in the earthquake zone and they are still going there. Our main goal is that Turkey should be a country with earthquake awareness and after having this awareness, it should build strong earthquake-resistant buildings. It is very important for us that you will be aware of this issue from the time you are a student and that you will grow up with an idea about these issues. I would like to thank you for coming here."
Rector Kutluhan: "Because our country is an earthquake country, we are never safe from earthquakes. We need to learn to live with it and overcome it."
Pamukkale University Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Kutluhan stated the following in his speech "It is very important for us that you understand the earthquake issue and then take actions on these issues. Tomorrow, when you are building a construction, it is very important that you ask the question 'where are we going to build? Because our country is an earthquake country, we are never safe from earthquakes. We need to learn to live with it and overcome it. We will build earthquake resistant buildings. After all, there is an earthquake laboratory at our university. Thanks to Halil Hodja, we opened it to the service of Denizli and our country. It made me very happy to see you here in such an environment. We need to do this kind of trainings continuously. Halil Hodja is one of the leading experts in the field of earthquake and geology in Turkey. He has made great efforts. We would also like to thank Şemsettin Terzioğlu, who donated to us for the installation of these devices here and the establishment of the earthquake research center. The construction of this center is not important at all, what is important is to instill the earthquake issue in our young minds and to ensure that the constructions are built accordingly. We will not criticize anyone. We will not blame anyone. There is only one thing we will do. First we will sweep our own yard. We need to raise awareness of the society, they are our future. If we do so, we will recover, we will be able to fight the earthquake. We will be able to say that we were defeated by the earthquake, but these young people defeated the earthquake. Thank you very much for coming."
After the speeches, Prof. Dr. Halil Kumsar made a presentation to the students participating in the training, including basic awareness information about earthquakes. Then Prof. Dr. Kumsar made a presentation to the middle school students on earthquake simulation with earthquake shaking devices in PAU Şemsettin Terzioğlu Earthquake Science and Engineering Laboratory and gave various information.
