Symposium on “Current Issues in Private Law” Kicks Off with the Participation of Rector Güngör
Organized by Pamukkale University (PAU) Faculty of Law, the “Symposium on Current Issues in Private Law” was held on October 3–4, with the opening session inaugurated by PAU Rector Prof. Dr. Mahmud Güngör.
The event took place at the Şehit Piyade Teğmen Bekir Can Kerek Conference Hall in the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences (FEAS). The opening remarks were delivered by Dean of the Faculty of Law, Prof. Dr. Aliyar Demirci.
Dean Demirci: “I believe this platform will pave the way for many new symposiums”
Dean of the Faculty of Law, Prof. Dr. Aliyar Demirci, noted that although the faculty has a modest history, it has managed to organize significant academic events in a short time. He stated that this was the second symposium held this year, following the “Medicine and Law Symposium” organized in April. Referring to these events as “boutique but valuable,” Prof. Dr. Demirci expressed his belief that they would serve as a precursor to larger and more comprehensive symposiums in the future. He extended his gratitude to Head of the Department of Private Law, Prof. Dr. Ayhan Kortunay, and his colleagues for their efforts in the preparation process. He also emphasized that inviting judges who shape judicial practice, alongside academics, would foster a strong exchange of knowledge. Prof. Dr. Demirci concluded by thanking everyone involved in organizing the event and expressed his belief that this platform would inspire many new symposiums to come.
Vice Rector Öz: “Such gatherings are essential for generating collective insight between legal practitioners and academics”
PAU Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Ersan Öz remarked that the symposium had been highly productive and had attracted interest from various cities, expressing his appreciation to the university administration for supporting such an initiative. Highlighting the interconnection between law and economics, Prof. Dr. Öz pointed out that bankruptcy and concordat proceedings affect not only debtors and creditors but also the entire economic chain. The closure of a company, he said, leads to unemployment, reduced production, and tax losses—hence the ultimate goal should be to save companies, which is precisely why legal mechanisms like the concordat exist.
Prof. Dr. Öz further explained that during previous bankruptcy postponement periods, most debts were owed to banks, while today, debts are largely owed to markets, creating serious problems within the supply chain. He drew attention to legal and practical challenges such as the burden of independent audit reports in concordat proceedings, creditor grievances, the negative effects of rumor-based “whisper economies,” and the valuation of real estate. Additionally, he proposed that regulations allowing for partial debt payments during the temporary grace period should be discussed. Prof. Dr. Öz concluded by emphasizing the importance of such meetings in fostering collective reasoning between legal practitioners and academics and thanked all participants for their contributions.
Rector Güngör: “I believe such symposiums will contribute to the development of Denizli and Pamukkale University, and ultimately to the country’s progress”
In his address, Rector Prof. Dr. Mahmud Güngör thanked the academics and members of the legal community who contributed to the symposium, noting that such events add great value to both the university and the city. Drawing from his academic experience, he underlined the importance of being financially prudent and well-planned, especially in economic matters. Prof. Dr. Güngör emphasized that the interest and feedback from different parts of Türkiye had significantly enriched the symposium. He expressed his belief that this event marks a beginning, and that larger and more comprehensive symposiums in the future would further contribute to the advancement of Pamukkale University, Denizli, and the nation as a whole. He concluded his remarks by thanking the participants and extending his best wishes of respect and goodwill.
Following the opening speeches, the first and second sessions of the two-day symposium were held on the first day. The second day featured the third session and the closing program, marking the conclusion of the event.
