TÜBİTAK Supports Project Examining Türkiye–Britain Relations After Brexit
A project led by Assistant Professor Pınar Uz Hançarlı, a faculty member in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at Pamukkale University (PAU) Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, has been selected for support under the TÜBİTAK 3501 Career Development Programme.
The project, titled “Türkiye in the Post-Brexit Period: Perceptions of Türkiye in British Foreign Policy and the Reframing of Türkiye–Britain Relations (2016–2026),” is planned to run for 18 months. It will examine how the United Kingdom has positioned Türkiye in its foreign policy discourse since the 2016 EU referendum and how this positioning has evolved over time.
The study divides the post-Brexit period into three phases. These are the 2016–2022 period, when the “Global Britain” vision came to the fore; the period of pragmatic readjustment that began with the Sunak government (2022–2024); and the 2024–2026 period, which encompasses the Labour government’s initiative to “reset” relations with the EU. The project aims to analyse three thematic dimensions—trade, security and the defence industry, and diplomacy—using critical discourse analysis.
