September 13 World Sepsis Day: Take Action Against the Silent Threat
Pamukkale University (PAU) Hospitals Faculty Member of the Department of Infectious Diseases Prof. Dr. Murat Kutlu made a statement about September 13 World Sepsis Day.
Prof. Dr. Murat Kutlu, Faculty Member of the
Department of Infectious Diseases at PAU Hospitals, shared the following
information in his statement:
“The leading cause of death in hospitals is sepsis. Again, sepsis is also the
number one reason for rehospitalization. Around the world, approximately 50
million cases of sepsis occur every year, and 11 million of them result in
death. Half of those who survive sepsis suffer long-term physical or
psychological problems.”
Prof. Dr. Murat Kutlu: “Sepsis often originates
from an infection such as pneumonia, diarrhea, and urinary tract infections.”
Prof. Dr. Murat Kutlu: “Sepsis is a medical
emergency and every hour is important in the treatment of patients. For this
reason, in the presence of sepsis symptoms such as impaired speech, impaired
consciousness, chills with fever, decreased urine output, shortness of breath,
or redness of the skin, immediate medical attention must be sought. Although
sepsis is responsible for one in every five deaths worldwide, it is dangerously
neglected. On the occasion of World Sepsis Day, the World Health Organization
in 2025 is calling on governments, health systems, the media, and society to
take action against sepsis. For this, it is aimed to increase sepsis awareness,
invest in preventing the development of sepsis, train healthcare professionals,
and make early treatment a priority.”
