PAU Hospitals Warn Public to Pay Attention to Healthy Eating During Eid al-Adha
Dr. Halil Yılmaz, Assistant Professor in the Division of Gastroenterology at Pamukkale University (PAU) Hospitals, made important recommendations regarding nutrition ahead of the upcoming Eid al-Adha holiday.
Emphasizing that the increased consumption of red meat during the holiday period may have certain negative effects on the digestive system, Assistant Professor Halil Yılmaz noted that excessive and unbalanced eating can lead to a rise in complaints such as indigestion, bloating, heartburn, and constipation.
Stating that the consumption of fatty and heavy meat dishes should be carefully controlled throughout the holiday, Assistant Professor Yılmaz continued:
“I particularly recommend that individuals with reflux, gastritis, ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, and gallbladder disorders exercise greater caution. Consuming freshly slaughtered sacrificial meat immediately can also lead to digestive problems. Therefore, allowing the meat to rest for at least 24 hours before consumption will be healthier both in terms of digestion and cooking.
The method of preparing meat is also very important. I recommend boiling, grilling, or baking instead of frying. In addition, the consumption of raw or undercooked meat should be strictly avoided.
Attention should also be paid to the habit of eating quickly at holiday meals. Large pieces of meat that are swallowed without adequate chewing, or small bone fragments that go unnoticed, may become lodged in the esophagus. Since this can cause serious health problems, especially in elderly individuals and children, it is important that meals be consumed slowly and carefully.
Rather than following a diet based solely on meat during the holiday, creating balanced meals that include vegetables, salads, yogurt, and whole-grain products will help ease the digestive system. Adequate daily water intake should also not be neglected.
It is of great importance for individuals with diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and stomach disorders to avoid heavy, fatty, and salty foods and to take their medications regularly.
On the other hand, preparing sacrificial meat under hygienic conditions and storing it properly is vital for preventing food poisoning. I would particularly like to remind everyone that thawed meat should not be refrozen.
I wish all our citizens a healthy, peaceful, and happy Eid al-Adha.”
