Multidisciplinary Approach to Obesity Symposium Held at PAU Hospitals
A “Multidisciplinary Approach to Obesity Symposium” was organized under the leadership of the Obesity and Bariatric Surgery Application and Research Center within PAU Hospitals.
Hosted by the Pamukkale University Faculty of Medicine on June 5, the symposium was attended by Pamukkale University Faculty of Medicine Dean and Vice Rector Professor İbrahim Türkçüer, Denizli Provincial Health Director Specialist Dr. Berna Öztürk, PAU Hospitals Chief Physician Professor Hakan Alkan, Deputy Chief Physician Professor Atakan Yılmaz, Chief Administrator Dr. Murat Taşer, Head of the Department of General Surgery Professor Onur Birsen, Faculty Member of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism Professor Şenay Topsakal, Faculty Member of the Department of Chest Diseases Professor Neşe Dursunoğlu, Faculty Member of the Department of Cardiology Associate Professor İpek Büber, Faculty Member of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Associate Professor Derya Kılıç Güler, Psychologist Ayben Baylar Doğan, Lecturer Dr. Hilmiye Pakyürek from the Department of Physiology at Uşak University, Faculty Member of the Division of Physiopathology at Ankara University Professor Nuray Yazıhan, Chief Physician of Aydın State Hospital Professor Gülnur Taşçı Bozbaş, Faculty Member of the Department of Medical Biochemistry at Selçuk University Professor Hümeyra Yerlikaya Aydemir, Faculty Member of the Department of Medical Biochemistry at Ankara University Professor Aslıhan Gürbüz Bolkan, Chair of the Board of Directors of the Denizli Family Physicians Association and Family Physician Specialist Dr. Çiğdem Akaydın, as well as healthcare professionals.
The opening speech of the symposium was delivered by Pamukkale University Faculty of Medicine Dean and Vice Rector Professor İbrahim Türkçüer. In his speech, Professor Türkçüer stated that obesity should no longer be regarded solely as an individual problem but as a multidimensional and chronic disease, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in combating obesity.
Within the scope of the symposium, current epidemiology of obesity, metabolic and hormonal mechanisms, nutritional therapies, physical activity approaches, psychological support processes, pharmacological treatments, and obesity-related diseases were discussed.
Professor Onur Birsen, Responsible Physician of the Obesity and Bariatric Surgery Application and Research Center, delivered a presentation titled “Indications for Bariatric Surgery and Patient Selection.”
“Obesity Is Not Fate; It Is a Treatable Disease.”
During the event, it was emphasized that obesity should be evaluated not only from the perspective of weight control but through a holistic approach involving the contributions of various disciplines, including endocrinology and metabolism, general surgery, psychiatry, psychology, dietetics, physiotherapy, and sleep medicine.
Participants gained insights into the latest scientific developments in obesity treatment through presentations delivered by expert academics and exchanged views across different disciplines.
At the end of the program, certificates of appreciation were presented to the speakers.
