“A Ball of Hope Child” Project Raises Cancer Awareness and Solidarity at PAU

08.04.2026
Within the scope of the “Bir Yumak Umut” social responsibility project, which aims to raise awareness about cancer and strengthen social solidarity, an awareness and solidarity event against cancer was held under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Ayşegül Koyuncu Okca, Head of the Department of Handicrafts at Pamukkale University (PAU) Denizli Vocational School of Technical Sciences (DTBMYO).

The project, which centers on the healing power of art, carries out awareness activities especially through handicraft production while also providing morale and support to individuals fighting cancer. With its volunteer-based structure, the project brings together individuals from different age groups and professions, creating a strong social impact.

Launched in 2017, the project was first implemented on the Pamukkale University campus and later in Bayramyeri and Çınar Square. This year’s event, coordinated by School Director Münire Kiriş, was held at Hasan Veli Üğür Kindergarten with the theme of “Children.” Denizli Deputy Governor Adnan Kayık, PAU Vice Rector Prof. Dr. İbrahim Türkçüer, and Pamukkale Municipality Deputy Mayor Uğur Çizmecioğlu attended the program. Within the scope of the event, teams from the Denizli Provincial Health Directorate, Provincial Directorate of Family and Social Services, Pamukkale University Hospitals, and the Oncology Volunteers Association set up information booths.

Art Turns into Hope

During the activities held within the scope of the “Bir Yumak Umut” project, participants produced ribbon motifs—the symbol of cancer awareness—using various knitting techniques. In this way, they experienced the healing effect of producing, while also spreading awareness messages through the crafted items. The assembly of knitted motifs was carried out by students of the Department of Handicrafts, kindergarten parents, and volunteer supporters of the project.

Project coordinator Prof. Dr. Ayşegül Koyuncu Okca stated: “Cancer is not only an individual struggle but also a social field of responsibility. With ‘Bir Yumak Umut,’ our aim is to raise awareness by using the unifying and healing power of art, to strengthen the sense of hope, and to enhance solidarity.”

Social Participation and Sustainable Impact

The project draws attention with its university–community cooperation structure and aims to create a sustainable social impact through the active contribution of students, academics, and volunteers. In addition, institutions such as the Provincial Health Directorate, Provincial Directorate of Family and Social Services, Pamukkale University Hospitals, and various public institutions and NGOs actively carried out awareness and information activities through exhibition stands.

“Bir Yumak Umut” Calls Society to Solidarity

Inviting all segments of society to join this meaningful solidarity movement, the “Bir Yumak Umut” project transforms a small “ball of yarn” into a large network of hope.
