The Rights and Working Conditions of Domestic Workers Discussed at a Panel Held at Our Faculty

A panel titled “The Position of Domestic Workers in Working Life: Organization, Social Security and Occupational Health and Safety” was held at the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences (FEAS) of Pamukkale University (PAU).

The event, held on May 15 at the PAU FEAS A Block Martyr Bekir Can Kerek Conference Hall, began with a film screening prepared by the Domestic Workers Unit of the Hizmet-İş Union. Following the opening speech delivered by FEAS Dean Prof. Dr. Ender Coşkun, HAK-İş Confederation President Halil Özdemir took the floor and drew attention to the structural problems surrounding working life in the domestic services sector.

Moderated by Prof. Dr. Handan Kumaş, the panel addressed the issues of organization, social security, and occupational health and safety faced by domestic workers through the contributions of union experts and academics.

In his presentation titled “Organization of Domestic Workers: Trade Union Representation, Collective Rights and the Struggle for Visibility,” Hizmet-İş Union Expert Asaleddin Yıldız discussed domestic workers’ access to trade union rights and the efforts to increase visibility within the sector.

Prof. Dr. Oğuz Karadeniz evaluated the social security rights of workers employed in domestic services. In his presentation, Karadeniz addressed the scope of existing rights, the difficulties experienced in accessing these rights, and the policy regulations needed in the coming period.

As the final speaker of the panel, Prof. Dr. Kâmil Orhan delivered a presentation titled “Occupational Health and Safety for Domestic Workers: Risks, Violations and Protective Policies,” in which he discussed workplace risks in domestic environments, socio-psychological problems, and protective strategies that could be developed against rights violations.

The panel concluded with a question-and-answer session in which participants directed their questions to the speakers, followed by the closing remarks.
