Pamukkale University (PAU) Hospitals Head of the Department of General Surgery Prof. Dr. Onur Birsen made statements on the occasion of European Obesity Day.
In his statement, PAU Hospitals Head of the Department of General Surgery Prof. Dr. Onur Birsen said: “Today, obesity is not only an aesthetic issue but also a significant public health problem associated with diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, sleep apnea, fatty liver disease, and many chronic illnesses. Sedentary lifestyles brought about by modern life, irregular eating habits, stress, and sleep disorders are causing the prevalence of obesity to increase steadily. Obesity has become one of the global public health problems of the 21st century and has reached epidemic proportions. However, obesity is a preventable and treatable disease. Early awareness, a multidisciplinary approach, and sustainable lifestyle changes are of great importance for treatment success. At the center, comprehensive health assessments for obesity, personalized nutritional treatments, lifestyle change counseling, medical obesity treatments, group training programs for individuals with obesity, and special follow-up programs are implemented. In addition, bariatric surgery is performed for individuals who do not benefit from other methods, who have a BMI over 35 accompanied by additional diseases, or who have a BMI of 40 and above, and multidisciplinary follow-up services are provided during the preoperative and postoperative process. On the occasion of European Obesity Day, we invite our society to raise awareness about healthy living, support regular physical activity, and seek professional support in the fight against obesity. Healthy individuals are the foundation of healthy societies.”
