PAU Meets Standards in Energy Management
Following the assessments, it was determined that the energy management system complies with the requirements of the ISO 50001:2018 Standard, making Pamukkale University (PAU) Kınıklı Central Campus eligible to receive the ISO 50001:2018 Energy Management System Certificate accredited by the Turkish Accreditation Agency (TÜRKAK).
The energy management activities carried out at Pamukkale University’s Kınıklı Central Campus were evaluated within the scope of its efforts under the ISO 50001:2018 Energy Management System, which aims to ensure the effective use of energy resources, regularly monitor energy consumption, reduce energy costs, and promote a sustainable approach to energy management across the campus. The evaluation covered energy management activities related to education and training, academic and administrative services, research and development activities, laboratory use, building operations, lighting, heating and cooling, maintenance and repairs, and campus support services. Following the assessments, PAU Kınıklı Central Campus became eligible to receive the ISO 50001:2018 Energy Management System Certificate accredited by TÜRKAK.
Energy Efficiency at PAU to Be Monitored Regularly
Providing information about the certification process and the energy management activities carried out at the university, Deniz Gülkaya Arıtürk, Quality Director of the Energy Management Unit within PAU’s Department of Construction and Technical Affairs, made the following statements: “We monitor energy performance indicators, compare them with historical consumption data, and establish our energy baseline. These efforts enable us to monitor our energy consumption periodically. Energy conservation and energy efficiency are different concepts. Energy conservation involves implementing restrictions and measures to reduce energy consumption within an existing system. Energy efficiency, on the other hand, means achieving the same or greater benefits with less energy consumption without compromising the quality or performance of the service provided. For example, switching off lights in unused areas helps conserve energy, while replacing existing lighting systems with LED technology that consumes less energy is an energy efficiency measure. The ISO 50001:2018 Energy Management System is a standard that addresses both conservation and efficiency together.”
Energy Awareness Training to Be Provided to Students and Staff
Noting that training sessions to raise energy awareness are also planned under the ISO 50001:2018 standard, Arıtürk shared the following information about the work to be carried out to monitor and evaluate energy consumption: “We will conduct energy awareness training sessions in line with annual plans under the ISO 50001:2018 Energy Management System. We aim to raise awareness among our students, academics, and administrative staff on this issue. At the end of the year, we will collect energy consumption data from our university’s administrative units and faculties. By analyzing the data we obtain, we will evaluate the impact of our energy efficiency efforts on energy performance and report the results to the relevant institutions and units each year.”
Continuous Improvement in Energy Management Is a Key Goal
Emphasizing that energy performance is regularly evaluated under the ISO 50001:2018 Energy Management System and that maintaining the system is important, Arıtürk shared the following information about the audits conducted during the certification process: “During the certification process, the energy consumption data and energy performance indicators recorded by our university are examined in detail. These assessments are used to analyze our efforts toward energy conservation and efficiency. Improvement and revision work is carried out in areas where necessary. To maintain the validity of the certificate, we undergo a reassessment process every year. In the audits to be conducted next year, the aim is to further enhance the compliance of our energy management system with the standards.”
