PAU Academics Contribute to Environmental Education and STEAM Activities in Croatia
Academic staff from Pamukkale University (PAU) participated in the student mobility program held in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, from October 15 to 17 as part of the Erasmus+ project titled “GREEN SAVING with STEAM EDUCATION (GREEN SAVE),” in which they are project partners, contributing to environmental education and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics)-based learning activities.
Coordinated by France, the project brings together partner institutions from Türkiye, Portugal, Romania, Italy, Spain, Bulgaria, and Croatia. Aiming to raise environmental awareness, promote sustainable living habits, and strengthen students’ interdisciplinary thinking skills, the project enabled students to engage in STEAM activities enriched through interaction with nature and awareness-raising activities focused on nature conservation.
Understanding Nature and Ecological Empathy Through Drama
As part of the activities titled “Understanding Nature Through Drama and STEAM,” PAU faculty members Prof. Dr. Fatma Kırmızı and Prof. Dr. Şahin Kapıkıran conducted hands-on activities with students in natural settings. The drama-based activities aimed to encourage students to evaluate nature from different perspectives, understand the living conditions of other organisms, and establish an emotional connection with nature. Centering on ecological empathy, the activities gave students the opportunity to reflect on the needs of living organisms in nature and develop environmentally sensitive solutions to environmental problems. Conducted through an experiential learning approach, the activities aimed to increase students’ environmental awareness and help them develop a sense of responsibility for nature conservation.
Sustainable STEAM Designs Using Recycled Materials
As part of the project, a hands-on activity titled “STEAM Designs for Green Saving in Nature” was conducted by Assoc. Prof. Dr. İ. Halil Yurdakal and Dr. Aslıhan Bilge Çopur. During the activity, held outdoors, students developed creative and environmentally friendly designs using recycled materials. Bringing together the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics, the activity addressed the reuse of waste materials and the efficient use of resources. By actively participating in the design and production processes, students experienced firsthand the importance of recycling for sustainable living.
International Collaboration for an Environmentally Friendly Future
The student mobility program carried out under the GREEN SAVE project brought together students and educators from different countries around a shared goal of environmental education. Through drama, ecological empathy, and STEAM design activities conducted in close contact with nature, learning environments were created to support both students’ creativity and their ability to develop solutions to environmental problems.
