11.09.2025
Pamukkale University (PAU) Hospitals Community Mental Health Center Responsible Physician and Faculty Member of the Department of Psychiatry Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayşe Nur İnci Kenar organized training on the fight against stigmatization of patients with severe mental illnesses and schizophrenia.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayşe Nur İnci Kenar, Responsible Physician of PAU Hospitals Community Mental Health Center, shared the following information in the training:
“In the case of severe mental illnesses, especially schizophrenia, educational activities continue within the scope of combating the stigmatization of patients by society and the press. Stigma is a mark that means a characteristic considered shameful in an individual. Stigmatization in mental illnesses is different from that in physical illnesses. Mental disorders change important human characteristics such as thinking, expressing emotions, and understanding social cues in social environments. Prejudices about severe mental illnesses, such as ‘schizophrenia patients are aggressive,’ ‘schizophrenia cannot be treated,’ or ‘schizophrenia patients should be excluded from society,’ contribute to stigmatization.”

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayşe Nur İnci Kenar: “It is aimed to reduce stigmatization through the Community Mental Health Center.”

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayşe Nur İnci Kenar: “Within the scope of these efforts, studies and training are carried out in the areas of introducing the illness to the public, educating and supporting the family, ensuring positive change in the media, and psychiatric rehabilitation. As part of these trainings and studies, training was organized by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayşe Nur İnci Kenar, Responsible Physician of PAU Hospitals Community Mental Health Center, at the Ministry of Justice Hasan Erbil Training Center Directorate, whose Head of the Training Center is Chief Public Prosecutor Erhan Kilik, for the personnel of the General Directorate of Prisons and Detention Houses of the Penal Institutions and Detention Centers.

In the training, Assoc. Prof. Dr. İnci Kenar said: ‘Do not be afraid of patients with schizophrenia, support them and approach them with tolerance. Learn about schizophrenia, change your negative prejudices about the illness. Give them the chance to work and produce, because one day your own child may also have schizophrenia!’”

At the end of the information session, Chief Public Prosecutor and Head of the Training Center Erhan Kilik presented flowers to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayşe Nur İnci Kenar and expressed his gratitude.
