Breath Therapy Event Organized for Chemotherapy Patients at PAU Hospitals

09.10.2025
The Department of Medical Oncology at Pamukkale University (PAU) Hospitals held an awareness event aimed at providing psychological support to patients alongside their medical treatment.

Led by Prof. Dr. Gamze Gököz Doğu, the session took place at the Selami Urhan Outpatient Chemotherapy Unit, offering breath therapy exercises to patients undergoing active treatment.

During the event, patients participated in practical breathing exercises guided by an experienced and certified breath instructor. Participants reported experiencing both physical and psychological relaxation, and feedback following the session was highly positive.

Prof. Dr. Gamze Gököz Doğu commented on the event:
“In medical oncology, it has become increasingly important not only to provide physical treatment but also to enhance patients’ quality of life and offer psychological support. International health organizations and guidelines emphasize approaches that address emotional challenges such as stress, anxiety, and depression during treatment. Long-term therapies can impose a significant psychological as well as physical burden on patients. Therefore, complementary methods such as breathing exercises, relaxation techniques, yoga, and music therapy are gaining importance in treatment processes.

With this perspective, we organized a breath therapy event for patients in our unit. Breath exercises simultaneously relax both body and mind. Participants reported increased awareness, reduced anxiety, and a sense of relaxation during the session. While such holistic approaches are not yet widespread in our country, the positive feedback we received encourages us to expand these efforts. We believe that supportive practices like this will not only improve patients’ adherence to treatment but also enhance their overall well-being. Our primary goal moving forward is to reach more patients and make these sessions a regular part of our care program.”
