Earthquake Seminar at PAU

27.03.2023

In the event held at Pamukkale University (PAU) Faculty of Health Sciences, Prof. Dr. Ali Aydın, Faculty Member of PAU Faculty of Engineering, Department of Geological Engineering, came together with the students of the Faculty of Health Sciences.

Prof. Dr. Ali Aydın gave important information on many subjects from the millions of years of history of the geography in which our country is located to today's earthquake zones, from fault lines in settlements to the construction of buildings and the importance of the materials used in them.

Prof. Dr. Aydın, who also gave various information about the physical explanation of the earthquake, the definition of the earthquake and how the earthquake occurs, how the earthquake wears out the buildings, where and how seismic activities are currently taking place in Denizli, seismological movements and fault lines: "Our country is one of the regions where the biggest earthquakes have been experienced throughout history.  While building our buildings, especially ground surveys should be carried out, wetlands and swampy lands should not be opened for settlement. Building inspection should be carried out by companies. We should not save on materials while constructing our buildings.  In addition to the problems experienced by buildings with missing materials, even if we think that the buildings are solid, the materials used in them corrode over time. Buildings get tired in this way. However, the proportion of multi-storey apartment buildings is quite high in our country. Single-story detached buildings are healthier."

In the continuation of the seminar, Prof. Dr. Ali Aydın touched upon the ground investigations carried out in Denizli and underlined that Denizli is a city built in a region where the materials carried by the streams are located and that the city has a history of thousands of years. Stating that Denizli is a wetland from the past to the present, Prof. Dr. Aydın emphasized that some of our regions are areas that can never be zoned within the scope of ground survey. Referring to the history of the Aegean Region, Prof. Dr. Ali Aydın stated that the Aegean Region was home to ancient cities such as Hierapolis, Laodikeia and Tripolis and that these settlements were destroyed as a result of earthquakes in history and that archaeological studies revealed this.

Prof. Dr. Ali Aydın stated that among the main risky areas in Denizli; Bağbaşı, which is a region suitable for rockfalls and mass movements, the plain and reed area located to the north of Yenişehir Servergazi Tomb, where there is generally contiguous construction, İstiklal, Saltak Street, Ataturk Street, which is located at relatively low elevations and where there is unplanned urbanization, Üçler-Sümer Park Road, including the vicinity of the Gökpınar Dam Basin. Prof. Dr. Aydın also mentioned earthquake and ground issues in his speech and drew attention to the Fethiye-Burdur Fault Line and emphasized that the biggest earthquake will occur in our region. Emphasizing the technical staff, Prof. Dr. Ali Aydın drew attention to the necessity of establishing earthquake engineering and mentioned the necessity of establishing blasting and demolition engineering as an element.

Finally, he concluded his speech by adding that the campus area was built on a good ground, that the buildings in our university were generally built after the earthquake regulations, and that the buildings in our institution are solid and safe.
