The event titled “Cybersecurity and Cybercrime,” organized by Pamukkale University (PAU) Faculty of Communication and the Communication Community, focused on the rise of cybercrimes and the necessary measures to combat them.

The "Cybersecurity and Cybercrime" event, organized by the Communication Community of Pamukkale University (PAU), took place on Monday, December 9, at the Hierapolis Hall hosted by the Faculty of Communication. Experts from the Denizli Provincial Police Department's Cybercrime Division participated in the event, addressing the growing prevalence of cybercrimes alongside increased internet use and discussing measures to combat these crimes.

Experts from the Cybercrime Division delivered their presentations in sequence. The first presentation focused on raising awareness among youth through the SİBERAY program. The program’s objectives were explained:
“One of SİBERAY’s goals is to promote awareness about cybercrimes. As part of this initiative, we visit educational institutions at all levels to provide necessary information.”

In the second presentation, attention was drawn to the increasing number of cybercrimes, with the following statements:
“Cybercrimes encompass all offenses committed using information technologies. In today’s technological era, the internet is often utilized as a tool in nearly every crime. There is a perception that we can do whatever we want in the virtual world, but while the environment may be virtual, the crimes committed are real. Examples of such crimes include illegal betting, terrorist propaganda, illicit trade, and cyberbullying.”

The presentation also highlighted common issues like fraud and account hacking, accompanied by critical warnings:
“We have seen students falling victim to fraud by clicking on fake links promising scholarships. Clicking on malicious links can compromise your personal information. Keep your social media profiles private, use up-to-date antivirus software, and enhance your security measures.”

During another presentation on cybersecurity measures, participants were given the following recommendations:
“Do not open email attachments from unknown sources. Avoid connecting to public Wi-Fi networks unless necessary, as hackers can access your device. When shopping online, review user feedback and refrain from saving your card details. Use strong passwords for your social media accounts, enable two-factor authentication, and update your passwords frequently.”

At the end of the event, experts from the Cybercrime Division answered questions from the audience. Certificates of appreciation were presented to the experts for their contributions by Prof. Dr. Ali Soylu, Dean of the Faculty of Communication, along with Vice Deans Assoc. Prof. Fatma Yasa and Asst. Prof. Nevzat İnan. The event concluded with a group photo.
