“The First Step on the Road to Liberation: 19 May 1919” Event Held at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

The event titled “The First Step on the Road to Liberation: 19 May 1919,” organized by Pamukkale University (PAU) Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, was held at the PAU Prof. Dr. İsmail Çetişli Conference Hall.

The event featured Prof. Dr. Umut Karabulut, Head of the Department of History at PAU Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences; Prof. Dr. Ercan Haytoğlu, Head of the Department of History, Division of History of the Republic of Türkiye; and Prof. Dr. Mithat Aydın from the Department of Turkish and Social Sciences Education, Faculty of Education. It was attended by PAU Vice Rector Prof. Dr. İbrahim Türkçüer, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Prof. Dr. Bilal Söğüt, along with many academics and students.

Following a moment of silence and the singing of the Turkish National Anthem, the program opening and moderation were conducted by Prof. Dr. Ercan Haytoğlu. In the panel, Prof. Dr. Mithat Aydın discussed the process from the Armistice of Mudros to the departure of the Bandırma Ferry from Galata Pier and its journey to Samsun, also highlighting the Treaties of Sèvres and Lausanne.

Prof. Dr. Umut Karabulut detailed the role and importance of the Bandırma Ferry, which changed the course of the War of Independence, and explained the historical background behind Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s selection for this critical mission.

The event concluded after Vice Rector Prof. Dr. İbrahim Türkçüer presented certificates of appreciation to the speakers.
