What to Do for Cancer Patients During Coronavirus Period

In this period, in which Covid-19 disease is common, including our country, the treatment of cancer patients continues without disruption. PAU Hospital Medical Oncology Department Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Arzu Yaren made explanations about the treatment of cancer patients and what to do.

Considering the general condition of the patient, the expected benefit from the treatment, and the side effects of the treatment, the treatment decisions of patients should be given by the attending physician. Patients whose treatment has been completed, an the follow up continues, can be rescheduled as deemed appropriate by their doctor. For any questions and problems of our patients diagnosed with cancer and whose treatment continues, they should continue to communicate with their doctors or the centers they follow.

Covid-19 is a disease transmitted by droplets that spread through the air through sneezing and coughing.

For this reason, in order to protect our patients from this infection, it is necessary to take care of hand hygiene, use masks when it is necessary to go out and maintain social distance. For hand hygiene, hands should be washed with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use hand disinfectant with at least 60% alcohol. It is also important to regularly clean common surfaces. Glove should not be used as it will increase the risk of contact and contamination on infected surfaces. Patients who are still on treatment should use a mask when they have to go out. Hands should be cleaned with soapy water or alcohol based disinfectant before using these masks. The mask should cover the mouth and nose without any gap. Patients should not use public transport while coming to treatment, and if they have to use, they should pay attention to the rules of protection. Maintaining the social distance and getting away from sneezing and coughing are the most important points to be considered.

Patients coming for the outpatient clinic should come with a maximum of 1 person.

It is important to have a healthy diet, exercise and a good sleep pattern in order to maintain immunity during pandemic. In maintaining mental health, it may be beneficial to follow reliable news sources and to communicate with people they love by phone or computer.

The important thing is not to panic but to take the precaution.

This pandemic will definitely end one day…
